A tavern scene, oil on panel, 30 x 22.5 cm, framed. We are grateful to Willem van de Watering for recognizing the present painting as a characteristic work by the painter Jochen van den Heuvel (d. 1635)
On the reverse collector's stamp and the mark of the panel maker, CVE. Jan van de Venne is identical with the painter known by the pseudonym, Pseudo?van de Venne (see J. de Maere and M. Wabbes, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, Brussels 1994, p. 407). Typical of him, according to Walther Bernt, are “one-sided lighting which emphasizes the most important element and very prominent drapery folds...”.
